Our brains are wired to enjoy stories. At a very basic level, all human communication is narrative: we order our experiences and make sense of them through stories. (Here's an interesting book about that idea.) So it's no wonder a lot of people have a book they want to write.

My wife Linda and I are longtime northern gardeners, and we have slowly been learning how to garden in Florida. Some of the neighbors still refer to us as "the snowbirds"—even after seven years. At first, our Florida gardening efforts were somewhat frustrating; what worked up North did not work in the Sunshine State. Since moving to the sub-tropics of St. Petersburg, Florida, we have developed a different take on gardening.

The world's largest trade show and conference for independent garden centers is the IGC Show, to be held this year from August 21-23, at Navy Pier in Chicago. The tagline for this year's event is "Profits Abound!"—and we certainly hope so. This show is a fantastic opportunity to find new products, learn from the industry's top leaders, and walk away inspired. More than 1,000 exhibitors pack the main floor of more than 200,000 square feet. It's an amazing experience, and a great place to connect with the industry.

Nicknamed the "Garden Boss," William Moss is one of America's most respected and sought-after authorities on greening, gardening, and urban agriculture. Season after season he energizes small space gardeners to "Get Out and Grow!" with gardening programs on Discovery Channel, TLC, and HGTV as well as various news programs, internet programs, radio broadcasts, and print publications. The Moss-inspired garden may exist on rooftops, in containers, wedged into community gardens, or in perfectly executed raised beds. Lack of space is no deterrent for Moss – who once gardened in a small piece of ground alongside a railroad track. "Dead End" sign and all, Moss transformed his first foray into a beautiful flower garden that commuters enjoyed on their walk to and from the train each day.

When I was in college, I became friends with a girl whose nickname, I thought, was "Duck." It turned out that her nickname was "Duct" given to her because she and her family had been held up in their home by robbers who used duct tape to bind them. (At the time, this was funnier than it sounds now.)
