Ray Wolf, Cool Springs Press Publisher, and our Ball hosts, Bill Calkins and Katie Rotella.

Did you ever wonder where new plants come from? How do new cultivars with amazing new features make it to the shelf of your local garden center, and then ultimately into your yard? Well, one the best places where this happens is at the Ball Horticultural test gardens.

Ball Horticultural Company was founded in 1905 and has grown into a leader in all facets of floriculture. You know many of Ball's award-winning varieties to the world of horticulture, including the Wave® Petunia family, Dazzler® and Super Elfin® Impatiens, and Fiesta™ Double Impatiens.

I recently had the opportunity to visit Ball with Cool Springs Press publisher Ray Wolf to talk about our Cool Springs Digital projects. While we were there, we enjoyed a great tour of the Ball test gardens with our amazing tour guides, Bill Calkins and Katie Rotella. The Ball test gardens, where is all happens, are located at the Ball headquarters in West Chicago, Illinois.

Have you visited Ball Horticultural? What did you like the best?

Large potted Gerbera Daisies.

Vertical wall plants sampled in simple wall-mounted planters.

Experimental Celosia with large velvety blooms.

Ball's new Bumper Crop grafted tomates are tested at the garden.

New experimental peppers anyone? Can't say how hot it is yet.

Is that a melon growing among the Vinca? You never know what you're going to find at the Ball test gardens.

Wow! Large Impatiens growing in direct sunlight!

Improving Lantana means growing them so they produce fewer berries. Less fruit means more flowers.
